Sanford council OKs tree-removal and brush-cleanup bids, hears $250,000 mural-and-walkway proposal

The Village of Sanford approved two public-works contracts and reviewed park-related projects and events at its Sept. 8 meeting.
DPW Matt Hall reported coordination with vendor Heinz on tree selection and placement in Village Park. Carl Hamann moved to accept Heinz's $4,400 bid to remove dead and dying oak trees on Smith Street; Leah Ziems seconded and the vote was unanimous.
Marcus Thrush moved to accept a separate $6,000 Heinz bid to clear brush on village property southwest of the Sanford trail head to prepare a site for a future pump track; Carl Hamann seconded and the council approved the work unanimously.
Separately, Stacey Trapani and project donors proposed a mural beneath the powerhouse and a historical walkway describing the four dams. The project team estimated roughly $250,000 would be needed and is working with the Midland Area Community Foundation to establish a fund; grant-seeking from foundations, including an expected decision from the H.H. Dow Foundation by the end of September 2025, was reported.
Council also approved Fall Cleanup postcard mailing in October for service Oct. 20–Nov. 5. Under council reports, Parks and Rec updates included potential donations of paddle equipment and continued work on boat-launch and beach-dredging projects at the county level. Marcus Thrush suggested informal pickup soccer games at Porte Park and requested meeting packets be distributed by Friday; Carl Hamann said he would research portable-toilet options for the park.
The meeting closed with a motion to adjourn at 8:30 p.m.
