Council considered two generator quotes for the Village building and the Fire Department and discussed related DPW operational matters and insurance concerns.
Officials compared a natural-gas standby generator (which would run the entire building) with a portable unit that is less expensive and easier to replace. Nelson Township told council it would not contribute to a generator for the entire building and expects the Village to purchase a unit for Fire Department needs; council members said the generator purchase should be put into next year’s budget.
Separately, council reviewed an insurance concern after two incidents in two years in which parked vehicles were struck in front of the DPW/Fire bay doors. Officials noted the Village needs four claim-free years to seek a lower-rate insurer. Camilleri moved, with Latham supporting, to prohibit parking in front of the DPW/Fire station; the motion carried with Wright recorded as opposing. Wright then successfully moved (supported by Latham) to add a reprimand for people caught parking there. Council also heard a DPW reminder that no street parking is allowed Nov. 1–April 1 for plowing.
Why it matters: vehicle strikes and insurance claims affect village insurance rates and the operational ability of DPW and fire crews to access equipment; a generator choice affects emergency operations and municipal budgeting.
Next steps: the council will include generator options in next year’s budget planning and implement the parking prohibition and reprimand policy at the DPW/Fire station.
