North Canaan Recreation Commission sets Holiday Light Contest deadline, reviews field and program needs

The Town of North Canaan Recreation Commission on Oct. 21 approved its meeting agenda and September minutes, set deadlines for the town’s Holiday Light Contest and reviewed facility and program updates.
Chairwoman Lindsey Crane read the director’s and treasurer’s reports in the absence of the director and treasurer. The director’s report said softball wrapped up with 19 girls playing four games against Barkhamsted; soccer has one week remaining; basketball registrations close next week and North Canaan will host the regional kindergarten program. Registration windows and travel-ball tryouts were described; Housy Hoops signups end Nov. 4. Crane also reported that the pool has been closed for the season and staff completed pool-house tasks.
The commission discussed field maintenance needs. Commissioners said Segalla Field and the Steve Blass field require additional clay and that a larger shed is needed for field storage. Chairwoman Crane said Director Bunce had spoken with Chris Crane to remove old sand from the volleyball court so it can be mixed with newly purchased clay for Segalla Field; a plastic shed from Lawrence Field will be moved to Segalla Field temporarily until a replacement shed is acquired. The commission expects work on the volleyball court in the coming weeks and placed the Ski Club on the agenda for the next meeting.
On finance, Crane read the treasurer’s report noting a balance of $10,865.40. Lifeguards were reimbursed for certification classes and portable toilets are scheduled for pickup next week. Crane said a new company operating Suburban Sanitation issued a prorated bill that had not previously been processed; the commission will note that for next season.
Under old business, Commissioner Justin Ellison said the Yard Goats organization reached out about group ticket-sale dates; he proposed selecting two dates next month and directing proceeds toward shed purchases or similar needs. Ellison also reported he has contacted UConn about winter-sports group sales but had not received a clear response about availability while season-ticket holders are being prioritized.
The commission moved and carried a motion from Commissioner Tom Bunce to set the Holiday Light Contest entry deadline for Dec. 14 and the viewing date for Dec. 16; Commissioner Justin Ellison seconded. Members noted the contest flyer will be required by Nov. 5 for inclusion in the town monthly newsletter.
The commission discussed scheduling and communication practices. Members agreed to move the Nov. 18 meeting to Nov. 17 so Chairwoman Crane can attend. Crane urged commissioners to improve communications with residents and to avoid routing excessive tasks solely to Director Bunce; she recommended acknowledging public questions, bringing them to the commission, and inviting commenters to meetings. Commissioner Tonya Roussis asked that the topic also be raised with the Board of Selectmen.
Before adjourning, Commissioner Melissa Pinardi reported a broken section of fencing at the playground near the dog park. The commission adjourned at 7:46 p.m. Meeting minutes were submitted by Recording Secretary Ayrslea A Odell.
The commission’s next regular meeting was rescheduled to Nov. 17; Ski Club will be added to that agenda.
