Ames City Council approves zoning text update for accessory dwelling units on second reading

The Ames City Council on June 16 approved the second reading of an ordinance updating zoning text limits for accessory dwelling units, advancing the ordinance after a unanimous roll-call vote.
Council conducted the vote at the start of a special workshop meeting. A motion to adopt the ordinance on second reading was moved and seconded; Council members Rollins, Beatty-Hansen, Gartin, Betcher, Junck and Corrieri registered ‘‘aye’’ and the motion carried.
City staff told the council the revised language reflects a motion the council made at a prior meeting and is intended to update development standards for accessory dwelling units. No public input was taken at the workshop on the ordinance.
The council did not take additional action at the meeting and staff indicated further implementation steps would follow in accordance with the city’s standard ordinance-adoption process.
