Rushford Village council examines options to reduce levy, weighs CEDA contract and equipment purchases

Clerk Mary Miner asked the council for ideas to pare the proposed levy and identified a target that would require roughly $40,000 in reductions to reach a 7.5% levy increase.
Councilmember Robert Hart suggested removing the ongoing CEDA contract and instead hiring CEDA on an as-needed basis, eliminating a planned trailer purchase and cutting the tools budget. Travis Link supported reviewing the CEDA contract and questioned whether a generator is needed; Miner said FEMA grants for generators exist but are not currently available and she will sign up for notifications about future grants. Mike Ebner favored keeping the trailer in the budget for now but noted a new trailer could cost about $3,200 or a good used one might be available.
Miner recommended reviewing the Harter’s trash contract at renewal; Treasurer Judy Graham noted other trash contractors have expressed interest. The council discussed how residents value included trash pickup (no monthly bill) and that the program’s origin was to reduce roadside dumping and burning. Miner asked council members to continue evaluating options; the levy must be set at the council’s last December meeting.
No formal levy decision was made at the Oct. 7 meeting.
