Board moves teacher development day to Feb. 17 and accepts library policies as first readings

The Norfolk Board of Education voted unanimously on Dec. 9, 2025, to move a scheduled teacher professional-development day from June 9, 2026, to Feb. 17, 2026, to better align training on the science of reading. The motion was made by Virginia Coleman-Prisco and seconded by John Withnell. Under the approved change, Botelle students would be off on Feb. 17 and attend school on June 9.
At the same meeting the board accepted three library-related policies — 1312.3 (Library Material Review and Reconsideration), 1312.4 (Library Collection Development and Maintenance), and 1312.5 (Library Display and Program) — as first readings following a motion by John Withnell and seconded by Michael Listorti. The proposed 2026–27 meeting calendar will be revisited at the Jan. 13, 2026 meeting after earlier discussion resulted in tabling the schedule.
Administrators said February 17 was selected to situate professional development closer to the teachers' continuing reading training; no vote counts beyond unanimous approval were recorded in the minutes.
