North Canaan Board of Finance approves routine items; Selectman to schedule town meeting on LOCIP funds

The Town of North Canaan Board of Finance convened on Nov. 12, 2025, and approved its agenda, last month’s minutes, monthly financial reports and the tax collector’s reports.
Chairman Doug Humes called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and the board handled a series of routine motions that were each moved, seconded and carried: approval of the agenda (moved by Christian Allyn, seconded by Bryan Johnson), approval of prior minutes (moved by Brian Allyn Sr., seconded by Chris Sorrell), acceptance of the monthly financial reports (moved by Christian Allyn, seconded by Bryan Johnson) and acceptance of the monthly tax collector’s reports (moved by Christian Allyn, seconded by Brian Allyn Sr.). During the tax-collector item members noted they had not received the tax collector’s report by email; Chairman Humes said he will ask the Selectman’s office to ensure the reports are sent each month.
Chairman Humes reported he had called the town auditor but did not receive a response, and no treasurer report was given at the meeting.
During Selectman’s time, Selectman Bunce said he will review a proposed truck purchase further before sending it to a town meeting. He also said the town must hold a separate town meeting to allocate LOCIP funds and that he will schedule that town meeting at the next Selectmen’s meeting in December. Board members raised budget questions: Christian Allyn asked for a clearer plan for addressing the tax collector’s salary line, which Allyn said is already over budget, and Bryan Johnson noted that most of the budgeted town counsel funds have been used and urged attention to attorney expenses this budget season. Selectman Bunce said he hopes counsel-related matters will be resolved in the coming months but could not rule out additional costs.
Chairman Humes congratulated Emily Bottum and John Jacquier on their recent elections to the board; they are expected to join next month’s meeting. There were no public comments. The meeting adjourned at 7:11 p.m.
Next steps noted by the board: Selectman Bunce will schedule the LOCIP town meeting in December; Chairman Humes will ask the Selectman’s office to start emailing tax collector reports monthly.
