North Canaan Board approves hires, tuition waiver, multiple policy adoptions and building committee appointments

At its Feb. 19 meeting the North Canaan Board of Education unanimously approved two new hires, a conditional tuition waiver for a staff members nonresident PreK child, appointed two members to the local building committee, and adopted multiple administrative and library policies.
The North Canaan Board of Education voted unanimously on Feb. 19, 2026 to hire instructional and counseling staff, grant a conditional tuition waiver for a staff members child in PreK, appoint two members to the North Canaan Building Committee and adopt a package of administrative and library policies.
Mrs. Amy Dodge moved each of the motions and Mr. Christopher Jacques seconded them; votes were recorded as 6-yes (Mrs. Lindsey Crane, Mrs. Amy Dodge, Mr. Christopher Jacques, Mrs. Brooke Riva, Mrs. Gina Terwilliger and Mrs. Caitlin Tomko).
The board approved a tuition waiver under Policy 5118 for the 2026-2027 school year for a nonresident student currently enrolled in PreK as the child of a staff member, with the condition that the waiver would not require hiring another teacher. The board then voted to appoint Lindsey Crane and Gina Terwilliger to the North Canaan Building Committee.
For staffing, the board approved hiring Christine Lauretano as a third-grade teacher (BA, Step 7). The board also approved hiring Hunter Merrill as a school counselor at 0.4 full-time equivalent.
The board approved multiple policy actions: a first reading was held for policies including 5113.13 (Work-Study Student Employment Work Release) and a presentation on Service Animals; the board moved to adopt Region One Transition Policies in the 2000 series. Separately, the board approved policies including 4152.6 (Family and Medical Leave Act), 0521 (Nondiscrimination), 6161.12 (Library Material Review and Reconsideration), 6161.13 (Library Collection Development and Maintenance), 2100 (Administrative Staff Organization), 2112 (Professional Development), 2121 (Lines of Responsibility), 2210 (Administrative Leeway in Absence of Board Policy), and 2300 (Code of Ethics).
The board scheduled a budget workshop for the North Canaan Elementary School FY2026-27 budget on Feb. 26, 2026 at 6:30 p.m. in the NCES library. The meeting was adjourned at 7:05 p.m. The minutes were respectfully submitted by Kerry Rooney and later approved on March 10, 2026.
