Pella commission discusses temporary Tulip Time yard signs for local historic districts

The Pella Historic Preservation Commission on March 9 discussed a plan to place temporary yard signs in properties within local historic districts during Tulip Time.
Chairperson Rhonda Kermode said she and Commissioner Jill Jansen had spoken with Joe Michmershuizen of Promotions by Design and preferred a round sample sign that Planning and Zoning Director Gerald Buydos had shown at the February meeting. The proposed foam-core sign would display the historic district name and year built, the house name or builder, the architectural style, and include a QR code linking to more information.
Kermode said she will ask Promotions by Design for a ballpark cost estimate and whether the signs could be completed in time for Tulip Time this year. Commissioner Duane Rempe noted that the Marion County Foundation grant submittal deadline is April 17, 2026, and could be a possible funding source; Commissioner Bruce Boertje said the Pella Preservation Trust might assist with costs.
The commission also suggested staff mail letters to property owners in local historic districts about placing temporary signs and recommended that staff send letters by April 20, 2026 to give owners adequate notice. No formal funding decision or motion was recorded at the March 9 meeting.
