Pella HPC reports progress on Certified Local Government application

The Pella Historic Preservation Commission on March 9 reviewed progress toward becoming a Certified Local Government (CLG).
Planning and Zoning Director Gerald Buydos told the commission that biographical sketches from all HPC members have been received and forwarded to MIPA Senior Planner Zhi Chen, and that staff sent Chen the inventory spreadsheet prepared by Commissioner Bruce Boertje. Buydos said Chen provided a sample CLG application letter for Mayor DeWaard to sign.
Commissioners noted the background work already completed: staff submitted a draft amendment to the historic district overlay zone ordinance to the State Historic Preservation Office of Iowa (SHPO) for review; after SHPO comments, the ordinance amendment was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission on Oct. 28, 2024 and by the City Council on Dec. 17, 2024. The commission did not take a formal vote on the CLG application at the March 9 meeting and identified staff follow-ups to prepare the mayoral signature and any remaining application materials.
