The Pembroke Town Board on Oct. 23 opened public hearings on a proposed local law to override the tax levy limit and the town’s 2026 preliminary budget, then closed both hearings after no members of the public attended.
Supervisor Thomas Schneider told the board that a recent reassessment allows the town to lower its tax rate and presented two proposed rates: $1.43 or $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value, compared with the current rate of $1.86 per $1,000. The board agreed on the $1.43-per-$1,000 option for the preliminary budget.
Schneider said that if the board ultimately adopts the budget as proposed, the town would not need to adopt a local law overriding the tax levy limit established by General Municipal Law §3-c for 2026. "If the board accepts the proposed budget as is then the tax cap override does not need to be passed this year," he said.
Both public hearings were closed by motion at 7:44 p.m. with unanimous consent. The board will consider final adoption of the 2026 budget at a later meeting following statutory notice and any required amendments.
