Local development director seeks study funding for dangerous Highway 8 & 50 intersection

Josie Friedly, co-economic development director for the Pawnee City Development Corporation, told the council she reviewed county crash records for the Highway 8 & 50 intersection adjacent to the Little Brown Jug and said a $1.5 million grant is available to complete safety studies.
Friedly said the city could apply next year for an implementation grant that might pay for measures such as rumble strips, enhanced crosswalks and flashing lights to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety. No formal council action was recorded to authorize application work at the June 8 meeting; Friedly presented the findings and discussed potential next steps.
Council members discussed the grant opportunity and community safety concerns but did not vote to commit city funds or approve a formal application at the meeting; staff follow-up was anticipated if the council moves forward with an application.
