The Monroe School District Board of Education received a year-end special education update from Jen, who said the district "ended the year on a very high note." Jen reported no new students enrolled in June, one student was withdrawn from services, 25 seniors graduated, and 12 students were newly found eligible, bringing the district's final special education enrollment for the 2023-24 school year to 611.
The update also included financial details: the district received $688,000 in excess-cost reimbursement related to special education, Jen said. She told the board that public and private transportation and tuition lines, the homebound line, and independent evaluation lines had gone over budget during the year because of student needs, but after year-end transfers the programs are positioned to move into the next year without asking for additional financing.
Board members asked clarifying questions about reimbursements and trends; Jen noted the excess-cost reimbursement was received at the end of the fiscal year and that transportation overspends were a known, recurring pressure tied to student needs. The board did not take a separate vote on special education changes at the meeting.
The district will continue to monitor special education expenditures as it finalizes smaller cleanup transfers expected in September.
