Board unanimously approves new teacher and leader evaluation plan aligned with recent state changes

Mike presented the district's updated teacher and leader evaluation plan and described how recent state legislation changed requirements and expanded tiers of support.
"We had to put our plan in front of the state during the month of August to get approval from the state and we got immediate approval for our plan from the state," Mike said, describing the plan's alignment with state standards and the Danielson framework.
Mike said the plan keeps goal-setting central but shifts to a mix of quantitative and qualitative measures, including student feedback, classroom artifacts and narrative reflections at year's end. Teachers set goals connected to district priorities; activities to meet goals may include peer visits, workshops or collaborative work. The district also outlined two cohorts for observation schedules: a cohort for early-career or newly hired staff with more formal observations and a cohort for experienced staff with a different minimum schedule. Mike described tiered support paths before corrective action, and said timeframes are set between an evaluator and teacher rather than prescribed by the legislature.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the qualitative measures, student feedback and the potential role for AI tools; Mike said AI could help with goal-setting and survey design but must be used thoughtfully. The board moved to approve the evaluation plan as presented; the motion was seconded and the vote was unanimous.
The plan will be implemented districtwide and documents will be housed in Google Classroom for teacher and evaluator use, Mike said.
