Superintendent Jen reported a brief special-education update to the board: "we had four students that moved in into District in the month of October" and nine students were made eligible for services, with one meeting the highest-cost threshold, bringing special-education enrollment to 630.
She outlined several budget pressures tied to special education. "Our tuition public line is overspent by $71,000" and the tuition private line is over by $22,000, she said, adding that the district has some students currently being outplaced and that spending may shift between public and private tuition lines depending on placements found. She also said the monitor funding for private transportation has increased by $15,000 due to behavioral and safety needs requiring additional monitors.
On facilities, Jen told the board that bids for the press-box replacement were higher than the budgeted amount and the district plans to act as the general contractor to complete the work. "We received the bids which were... higher than we anticipated and higher than the amount budgeted so ... Dan Copstick is going to do just that — he's going to serve as a GC for the project," she said. She said the bulk of the work would occur after the spring sports season or directly after graduation, with non-fall-impacting work started earlier where possible.
Jen also updated the board on the budget timeline: central office staff and administrators are meeting with principals and directors to collect budget requests; those meetings continue through tomorrow and analysis and prioritization will follow, with planning expected to move forward after Thanksgiving.
The board did not take further formal action on the press-box procurement at this meeting; the superintendent framed the general-contractor approach as a management decision to keep the project on track given bid results.
