Monroe superintendent: October enrollment steady overall but kindergarten shortfall tied to cutoff and waivers

Superintendent Joe presented the district's October 1 enrollment figures and cautioned that while overall K–12 enrollment looked comparatively stable, kindergarten counts are lower this year and could affect space planning.

"The total there was 3416 this year K through 12," Joe said, adding that the district counted roughly 34 fewer students compared with last year's end-of-year total. He identified kindergarten as the primary driver of the decline in several schools and attributed much of that drop to the recent change in the kindergarten cutoff date that excluded children born in September through December unless families applied for and received a waiver. Joe said about 40–45 families used the waiver this year, noting that waiver policy and eligibility could affect year-to-year comparisons.

Board members asked whether the demographer would have the updated October 1 counts; Joe said the demographer will meet with the board on Oct. 21 and planned to use the latest data for projections. He and other members also discussed that the cohort shortfall this year could be partially reversed in later years depending on waiver policy and shifting birthdate patterns, but stressed uncertainty about exact future counts.

The superintendent urged the board to monitor space pressures in schools that are tight currently and to consider the demographer's analysis before making capacity decisions. He noted the district will continue to report enrollment data and recommended follow-up at the next meeting after the demographer's presentation.
