Knox County names new library advisory members; contested reappointment draws public support

The Knox County Commission appointed multiple members to the county Library Advisory Board during its June 22 meeting and heard competing public views about library content and board qualifications. Jenny Mezik (District 1), Emily Briano (District 2), Karen Vigorito (District 5) and Scott Mure (District 8) were among those selected for three-year terms through July 1, 2029.
The appointments followed candidate interviews in which commissioners asked applicants about priorities for library service, the advisory board’s role, and how members should balance personal preferences with systemwide recommendations. Commissioners favored candidates with experience in libraries, community engagement, education and youth services; several appointees cited personal and professional ties to library work.
District 5’s appointment was the most contested part of the process. Becky Hoffseth, who sought reappointment, urged the commission to take a closer look at materials accessible to children in the system and proposed moving explicit or sexually oriented books from children’s and teen sections to adult sections. Supporters at the meeting said Hoffseth has been a consistent advocate for age-appropriate content; other speakers and commissioners said they value diverse collections and the professional judgment of librarians but welcomed constructive review processes.
Several commissioners noted the board is advisory and library policy decisions ultimately rest with the library director and, where applicable, state law. The commission approved the appointments by roll call; several candidates were appointed unanimously following motions and brief debate.
