Lake County officials propose 0.1‑mill cut to Crime Lab levy in proposed 2027 tax budget

Zach, the Lake County budget finance manager, presented the proposed 2027 tax budget at a public hearing held under Section 5705.30 of the Ohio Revised Code, saying, “The 2027 tax budget consists of levy funds that receive property tax revenue.” He listed funds included in the proposal: the general fund; children services; the Board of Developmental Disabilities; the ADAMHS Board; narcotics; the Crime Lab; and the Senior Citizens levy. The presentation noted the Crime Lab Levy is proposed to be reduced by 0.1 mills, decreasing from 0.7 to 0.6 mills.
The board invited written and verbal comments and the clerk reported no written submissions and no verbal comments were offered during the hearing. Commissioners discussed the proposed Crime Lab millage reduction, praising the prosecutor's office for stewardship of the fund and saying budget forecasts indicate the lab could maintain operations at the lower millage. Commissioners also said the board retains the ability in future years to increase the millage if resources prove insufficient and pledged to support law enforcement needs should the prosecutor request additional funding.
Jason, the county administrator, said staff are conducting a wider review of county revenues and fees, noting, “we're taking a hard look not just at the items listed on the agenda this morning, but all our other fee structures,” and described the review as part of efforts to spend down taxpayer balance dollars and direct funds to the community.
Two copies of the proposed tax budget will be delivered to the auditor's office for public inspection. The board announced it will consider adopting the proposed 2027 Lake County tax budget at its regular meeting on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Commissioners' Chambers; additional written endorsements or objections may be submitted to the clerk at the Lake County Administration Center in Painesville until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
No formal adoption or vote on the 2027 tax budget occurred at the hearing; the proposal to reduce the Crime Lab levy was presented as part of the budget and will be subject to consideration at the July 9 meeting.
