Chariton City Council approves community center fee waivers, pool-heater purchase and appointments

At its Feb. 2 meeting the Chariton City Council unanimously approved nonprofit rates and temporary fee waivers for community center users, authorized a $51,924.33 purchase of a LAARS pool heater for the Vredenburg-Chariton Family Aquatic Center, approved a lease addendum with LifeWise and confirmed an appointment to the Board of Appeals.
The Chariton City Council met Feb. 2, 2026, in the Council Chambers at City Hall and unanimously approved a series of routine actions, including fee waivers for the Community Center, the purchase of a new pool heater and an appointment to the Board of Appeals.
Parks and Recreation Director Hannah McGourty told the council the Parks and Recreation Board recommended granting the Lucas County Gaming Club the nonprofit rental rate of $25 per use of the meeting rooms and $10 for kitchen use; the council approved that recommendation and agreed to review the agreement at its Aug. 3, 2026 meeting. The council also waived Community Center fees for the 2026 After Prom Party Committee for use from 7:00 p.m. April 24 through 5:00 a.m. April 26, 2026.
On a separate vote the council adopted Resolution No. 2026-09 authorizing the purchase of a LAARS Boiler AP1825IN pool heater for the Vredenburg-Chariton Family Aquatic Center from Travis Mechanical and Controls, Chariton, for $51,924.33. Council Member Stephen Fenton moved the resolution; Cameron Storm seconded it. The roll call votes on all actions taken at the meeting were recorded as: Aye — Mayor Jayma Davis and Council Members Stephen Fenton, Jarrett McGee, Gary Shutt and Cameron Storm; Nay — none.
Council also approved an addendum to the lease agreement with LifeWise, changing its meeting days to Mondays only, setting the rate at $30 per week and correcting the agreement’s duration to Jan. 5 through May 18, 2026. Mayor Jayma Davis moved approval of the Parks recommendation on the Gaming Club fee; Jarrett McGee and Gary Shutt made other procedural motions. The mayor’s appointment of the City Council to serve as the Board of Appeals under Chapter 15 (Buildings and Structures) of the Chariton Municipal Code was approved.
There was no extended debate on any item. The council approved the Feb. 2 agenda and the consent agenda (minutes of Jan. 19 and Jan. 26, 2026) at the start of the meeting. With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:13 p.m.; the council set its next regular meeting for 5:00 p.m. Feb. 9, 2026.
