Council backs Wakema Court fundraising plan, sets Summit Street hearing and approves mower purchases

Parks & Recreation Director Ryan Anderson told the council March 10 that the department plans to replace the existing Wakema Court basketball court with a higher-end facility that would include two pickleball courts and a basketball court. Anderson said the project is estimated at about $89,000 and that parks staff have secured an $8,333 grant from Linn County; the department is seeking additional donations to cover the balance.
On other project business the council approved three resolutions. Resolution 2026-16 sets a public hearing on March 24, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. to consider proposed contract documents (plans, specifications and form of contract) for the Summit Street Water Main Improvements. The resolution passed on a roll-call vote with all four members present voting “aye.”
The council also approved Resolution 2026-17 to purchase a new mower for the Public Works and Parks departments and Resolution 2026-18 to approve the sale of the 2019 Bad Boy mower; both resolutions passed unanimously among members present. Motions to approve the resolutions were moved and seconded by Council Member John Stuelke and Mike LeClere with roll calls recorded in the minutes.
Ryan Anderson said Parks prefers a higher-end playing surface to encourage use and longevity; fundraising and grant funding will be used to offset costs. The council did not take further action on funding during the meeting; staff will continue outreach for donations and will present contract documents at the March 24 hearing for Summit Street improvements.
The hearing set for March 24 will consider contract documents for the Summit Street Water Main Improvements; the public is expected to have the opportunity to comment at that hearing.
