Sherman OKs up to $45,000 for Veterans Field court repairs and up to $4,950 for bathrooms; PW outlines chip-seal plan

The Town of Sherman Board of Selectmen on April 23 authorized repairs at Veterans Field and reviewed several Public Works projects, including a planned chip seal and a vendor quote for a fuel-management system.
PW Supervisor Kris Fazzone presented an estimate of $34,425 to repave the Veterans Field basketball court; the proposal does not include the removal of three sides of fencing, which would add cost. The board approved a motion, moved by Selectman Bob Ostrosky and seconded by Selectman Joel Bruzinski, authorizing repairs, removal of three sides of fencing and repaving for an amount not to exceed $45,000 to be charged to Capital Non-Recurring. The motion passed unanimously.
First Selectman Don Lowe said he toured the Veterans Field bathrooms and described needed repairs; Nelson Fall submitted an estimate of $4,765. The board approved up to $4,950 to refurbish the bathrooms, with funding to come from building maintenance. Business Manager Liz LaVia confirmed funds are available in the building-maintenance line.
On road maintenance, Fazzone said chip sealing is planned to start next week but may be delayed by predicted rain. He identified the sealant as MC3000 and listed roads slated for work, including Barlow Farm, Mauweehoo, Wagon Wheel, Peacepipe, Stonewall, Leach Hollow, Hardscrabble, Briggs, Chimney and a double coat on Cedar Lane; Sherwood Hill was judged unsuitable for chip sealing and Holiday Point would require full repair. Fazzone emphasized MC3000 must be applied within a specific window to be effective.
Fazzone also presented a quote from American Petroleum for a fuel-management system of just over $29,000; the first year of service is included and ongoing service contracts would be billed to the town. Business Manager Liz LaVia said the contract would be paid from the IT line as it is software that needs occasional servicing and updating.
Treasurer Andrea Maloney suggested coordinating the basketball work with Newfield's schedule; Fazzone noted Public Works resurfaced the track at no charge.
The board recorded unanimous votes on the Veterans Field motions; work timelines will depend on weather and contractor scheduling.
