CROG policy board approves eight TIP amendments, including major Route 9 reconstruction in New Britain

The CROG Policy Board approved eight amendments to the region's Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), including five newly proposed projects, a funding decrease on one item because bids came in low, and two projects moving out of the TIP to other funding sources.
Rob Alois, who presented the TIP amendments, said three of the new projects grew out of CROG‑initiated East Coast Greenway studies and will fund trail improvements in Bloomfield, Hartford and Simsbury. "For the new projects, one in three came from CROG's initiated studies of the East Coast Greenway," Alois said.
Alois highlighted a large amendment for New Britain on Route 9, describing roughly 2.5 miles of freeway work that will remove existing pavement, install new sound barriers, update drainage and undertake comprehensive reconstruction. He estimated the Route 9 project would be over $100,000,000. The amendments also include bridge maintenance on I‑84 westbound over Shuttuck Brook Drive in West Hartford and various new traffic control signal projects in Canton (Route 44), Simsbury (Route 167) and Suffield (Route 75).
The Transportation Committee reviewed the amendments, found funding sources appropriate and recommended approval. The board approved the TIP amendments by voice vote.
Staff said backup materials list specific locations for the signal projects and that only three of 17 listed projects are within the CROG region; municipalities should consult the backup documentation for project details and funding sources.
