Geary County health director reports grant delays and small decline in STIs

The Geary County Health Department reported grant payments approved by the state remain outstanding and presented program and facility updates to the county commission on Feb. 17.
Health Department Director Charles Martinez told commissioners the department is still awaiting grant funding previously approved by the state. Martinez also reported a 6% decline in sexually transmitted infection rates from 2024 to 2025 and provided disease surveillance and outbreak statistics. Staff completed annual PPE training; the department is expanding community outreach through SAFE Kids and OPEIS program expansions. Martinez noted routine facility work including replacement of fire alarm parts, removal of unused filing cabinets and repairs to an outside urinal light.
Commissioners briefly opened and then closed the meeting as the County Board of Health to receive the report. No staffing changes were announced during the presentation and the health department presented its financials to the commission.
