Parents, youth players and local coaches asked the council to preserve the city’s existing soccer fields and accelerate repairs or short-term accommodations while the city advances a longer-term plan.
A child speaker told the council the fields are an essential gathering place and pleaded with members to keep the site for recreation. Coach Mike V (self-identified) described scheduling difficulties after the loss of lighting and field availability, saying the club needs “a short-term plan where we can accommodate the club a little bit better and then put our long-term plan in place.” Other speakers urged using available city resources to fix the retention pond or irrigation system rather than building a replacement facility at a higher cost.
Staff reported they have received engineering bids for irrigation and are examining the retention pond and a needed new water line; staff said updates and additional project details will be presented to council in December and that irrigation work is planned for 2025, with earliest play on new turf likely in 2026 depending on construction and turf establishment.
No council vote occurred on the soccer project at this meeting; residents asked that the city prioritize next steps so the community does not lose additional playing seasons.
