Townsend board corrects effective date for polystyrene restriction, closes public hearing

The Townsend Board of Health on June 22 closed the public hearing on a proposed polystyrene use-restriction regulation after staff said a typographical error had listed the wrong effective date.
The board’s chair said staff had intended a different start date, and that retailers had been aware of the forthcoming regulation for roughly a year. Staff asked the board to note the necessary correction, then wait for town council review before final signatures are completed.
Board members moved to close the hearing and to note that the regulation’s effective date would be set to Sept. 1, 2026 rather than the July 1 date that appeared in the document. The motion carried on a voice vote.
The board’s staff said the only substantive change to the adopted text was the effective date; the measure itself had been reviewed previously by the board and retail stakeholders had advance notice about the restriction. Town council will perform its review, and after that the board will finalize signatures and distribute the corrected document.
The board ended the hearing with instructions to update the date and to await any comments from town council before final execution.
