Region 4 committee asks FieldTurf to return with maintenance, irrigation and trail plans

The Region 4 Fields Renovation Advisory Committee asked vendor representative Chris Hulk of FieldTurf to return to the committee with a detailed presentation on maintenance and irrigation planning after hearing updates on Sept. 25.
Committee Chair Miriam Morrissey said a soil engineer has completed flagging wetlands on the proposed cross‑country trail and is coordinating with the district surveyor to produce updated maps for submission to the Town; the committee is eyeing the November Inland Wetlands Commission meeting for presentation and anticipates work would begin over the winter once town approval is secured.
Morrissey also raised the possibility that an older irrigation system already exists at John Winthrop Middle School (JWMS). FieldTurf agreed to investigate whether the system lies on JWMS property, whether it remains functional, and whether it could be used for field irrigation.
The committee requested that FieldTurf present at the next meeting, expected in about one month, to cover: a multi‑year maintenance agreement the company offers for synthetic fields; recommendations for maintenance and upkeep of tennis and track court surfaces; whether local providers such as Liberty Landscapes can provide irrigation service agreements; and long‑term planning for surface replacement and major repairs (the committee referenced an 8–12 year replacement window).
The committee received ancillary updates noting that Valley Regional High School’s track and field and related stadium work (lighting, gates, sound systems) have been completed, and that John Winthrop Middle School has paving and drainage trench work finished, with walkways and ADA access improvements planned near tennis courts.
No formal motions or votes were recorded at the meeting. The committee scheduled an in‑person FieldTurf presentation for the next meeting and adjourned at 6:13 p.m.
