Cornwall approves $8.42 million budget for fiscal 2025–26

First Selectman Gordon Ridgway moved May 16 to approve Cornwall’s proposed Fiscal Year 2025–26 budget of $8,417,014, saying rising costs for garbage collection, highway maintenance and insurance account for a 3.51% increase in the Board of Selectmen’s portion of the budget. The motion, seconded by Joe Pryor, carried 22–1.
Ridgway said the town’s education budget will increase by 5.22%, which he attributed to higher electric rates, insurance costs, contractual teacher raises, an expanded school food program and a large incoming kindergarten class. When asked about exposure to cuts in federal or state funding, Ridgway stated that less than 10% of the town’s budget is derived from federal and state grants and that reductions in programs such as Medicaid or food supplies “may affect the towns.”
About 23 residents attended the roughly 15-minute special meeting held at the Cornwall Consolidated School gathering room. The budget was presented as recommended by the Board of Finance; the meeting record notes the town clerk read the call of the meeting and Scott Cady was elected moderator before the motion.
The meeting record shows the motion to adopt the budget carried by vote and no further actions on the budget were recorded at the session. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
