Canaan Fire Commission elects officers, approves bills and confirms ambulance coverage

Chairman Dave Seney called the Canaan Fire Commission to order at 5:04 p.m. on Jan. 14, 2026, at the Falls Village Volunteer Fire Department firehouse. The commission recorded the attendance of Dave Seney, Larry Bulson, Tim Downs, Roxann Steinberg Whitaker and Hazel McGuire and welcomed Roxann Steinberg Whitaker as a new member.
The commission approved a slate of officers naming Dave Seney as chairman and Hazel McGuire as secretary after a motion by Larry Bulson and a second from Roxann Steinberg Whitaker; the motion carried unanimously. The body also approved the minutes of the Dec. 10, 2025 meeting and received the treasurer’s report by unanimous vote.
During correspondence, EMS Captain Michelle Hansen reported that ambulance coverage will remain the same: “It will remain the same,” with NDP serving as the primary medic provider and North Canaan providing additional coverage. The minutes state the commission will add a contract with North Canaan to the 2026–2027 budget and that the department will pay this year’s North Canaan contract, estimated at about $5,500. (The minutes refer to the vendor acronym “NDP” without expanding it.)
The commission reviewed bills presented for payment. Line items recorded in the minutes include Lindell Fuels, Inc. (propane) for $686.90 and $1,045.19, and a Gowans Knight valve repair kit for $295.00; Engine 9 members provided the labor for the valve replacement. The minutes list a batch total of $2,027.09; the commission voted unanimously to approve payment.
Under old business, commissioners noted several hydrants remain to be removed because they are not functioning, and a dry hydrant on Route 126 requires attention. Radios and pagers are still being adjusted to work properly. In new business, commissioners noted that NASCAR events at Lime Rock will bring ambulance coverage in July 2026, that the department participated in several area light parades, and that members have held meetings to secure continued ambulance service with NDP and North Canaan. The department will assist with the town’s 250th celebration.
Hazel McGuire moved to adjourn at 6:00 p.m.; Larry Bulson seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The minutes were submitted by Secretary Hazel K. McGuire.
