The Naples Select Board voted unanimously June 22 to shut off and remove an older public electric‑vehicle charging station and directed staff to investigate pay‑per‑use replacement options.
Board members said the existing charger sees minimal use and that its placement in a driving lane creates traffic and safety concerns. One member reported observing a vehicle left plugged in for 21 hours over a recent weekend, and another described user complaints about slow charging performance.
"One vehicle in particular last weekend ... was plugged in for 21 hours," a board member said during discussion of low utilization and billing concerns. Members noted the current unit is older, slower than current commercial chargers and may not accommodate all vehicle adapters.
After discussing whether to lock or remove the unit, a board member moved "to shut it off and remove it, and ask the town manager or staff to look into putting a user fee on it or finding a new charger that has pay per use on it." The motion passed on a 4‑0 voice vote. The board asked staff to return cost estimates and options for relocation and user‑payment solutions.
Board members said they favored keeping a charging option in town for future needs but wanted to avoid ongoing utility costs for a seldom‑used, slow unit and to ensure any new device supports modern payment and adapter standards.
