JWMS irrigation and drainage repairs underway; wells plus repaired pump expected to supply field irrigation

FieldTurf and district staff told the Region 4 advisory committee that pump and piping from an on-site watercourse at JWMS failed after more than a decade of disuse and are being repaired; combined with new wells behind the school, the district expects sufficient irrigation capacity once repairs finish.
District representatives and FieldTurf reported on Oct. 29 that drainage improvements and an investigation into irrigation supply at John Winthrop Middle School (JWMS) are underway. Chris Hulk, the FieldTurf representative, said the existing water pump and piping from the watercourse at the bottom of the driveway to the middle school failed because they had not been used for over 10 years and are now being repaired.
Hulk said the district anticipates that, once repairs are complete, irrigation water will be sufficient for the proposed grass improvements at JWMS by combining the restored existing source with newly installed wells behind the school. The committee also discussed drainage swale renovations at the site.
Members discussed timing and environmental constraints; the committee noted that work near vernal pools is restricted during spring migration (March–May), and that routing decisions for the cross-country trail may affect construction access and irrigation planning. Committee members requested a follow-up meeting in early December to review progress on repairs and permit outcomes.
