Dennis Select Board places FY27 operating budget and three overrides for May ballot

The Town of Dennis Select Board on March 24 placed and supported the townoperating budget for fiscal year 2027 and three ballot questions that would raise additional property tax revenue if approved by voters.

Town administration presented a budget reconciliation that narrowed a projected deficit but left a remaining structural gap. Administration said recent changes to firm costs (insurance, contract settlements, debt service and school assessments) and limited revenue growth require either service cuts or voter‑approved overrides to avoid reducing services. The board voted to place Article 4, the FY27 operating budget at $51,266,780, and Article 5, an override that would raise $1,707,803 contingent on voter approval.

Select Board members also placed the DY Regional School District budget (Article 9) and its override request (Article 10) for $348,050, and the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School budget (Article 7) and its override (Article 8) for $44,147. The three override ballot questions will appear on the May 12 election ballot; the board approved the ballot language and timing required by law.

Town staff said the override packages include a modest contingency — roughly $300,000 in the town override — intended to preserve a small levy buffer for unanticipated needs. Board members discussed the timing for town meeting, the legal process for ballot questions and outreach to voters. The Select Board voted each placement by roll call.

What happens next: The Select Board will finalize warrant language and ballot paperwork for submission to the clerk. If voters approve any override on May 12, the town will collect the additional revenues starting in the FY27 tax year; if voters reject them, the town must adopt cuts to bring the budget into balance.
