EMA deputy warns of imminent heat wave; Carroll County lists cooling centers

Dustin Lucas, deputy director of Emergency Management Agency, warned the Carroll County Commissioners on June 29 that a significant heat wave is expected across the county beginning tomorrow and continuing through Friday, with daytime highs in the mid-to-upper 90s and nighttime lows in the mid-to-upper 70s.
"There's gonna be a high demand on the electrical grid," Lucas said, urging residents to plan ahead, check on elderly neighbors and pets, and limit outdoor activity especially over the holiday weekend.
Lucas listed available cooling locations during normal hours: Carrollton Library, Mount Vernon Library and the senior center at the fairgrounds. He said the EMA has alternate arrangements and additional emergency locations that can be opened if needed and that residents who cannot reach family or friends can call the EMA or dispatch nonemergency number for assistance.
Lucas said the state is expected to issue a heat advisory and that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could push heat index values higher. He said county communications will post weather updates and tips on social media throughout the week.
The EMA recommended staying hydrated, seeking shade, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities; county officials also reminded residents that Friday is a county holiday and some usual cooling-location hours may be affected.
