Commission presses city on ADA transition plan, sidewalk inventory, accessible parking and staffing

The update said the ADA coordinator has no fixed time allocation and handles work "as it comes in," sidewalk inventories are done primarily when road projects trigger evaluation, and DPW enforces the obstructed-sidewalk ordinance with a 14-day removal window. "I just wanted to say that I think it's kind of unacceptable that the idea coordinator can't ever come to our meetings," one commissioner said, expressing frustration at the coordinator's unavailability for in-person follow-up.

The report noted that some city-owned accessible parking spaces (the garage behind Thorne's) may not meet slope requirements and that remedy options should be explored; commissioners suggested identifying alternate accessible spaces outside the garage if the structure cannot be fixed. Court read that accessible-trail construction at Boggy Meadow Road and Fitzgerald Lake is underway and scheduled to be completed by June 30, and that automatic-door operator work at City Hall remains with Central Services after asbestos-removal issues delayed the project.

Commissioners asked for a targeted follow-up meeting at a time Keith can attend (Court said Keith is unavailable after 4 p.m.), suggested the commission provide a written list of clarifying questions, and recommended the ADA coordinator either attend or review the meeting recording to provide more detailed answers. The commission also asked DPW and other city staff to clarify enforcement steps for obstructed sidewalks and to provide a clearer sidewalk-inventory timeline.
