Peosta readies summer events and park upgrades; police get $6,800 GTSB grant

Council received a cluster of department updates about summer programming, park improvements and public-safety funding. Staff announced a second annual bike rodeo set for May 31 with free helmets, bike maintenance and an obstacle course; the Rays Run will require short street closures on May 17 from roughly 8:45 to 10:30 a.m.
Parks staff said that poured-in-place rubber surfacing for a playground was installed recently and seating work continues; the indoor track is undergoing flooring replacement and is expected to re-open early the following week. A recent town cleanup collected about 21 tons of material, including 12 appliances, 34 TVs and seven car tires.
Public-safety staff reported the city received $6,800 from a GTSB grant (the department had applied for $9,800). Staff described how the award will be allocated: $4,500 for general enforcement/overtime, $1,500 for impaired driving enforcement, $400 for a PBT device and $400 for ‘drunk-goggles’ training.
Staff also asked council to check for trail safety at a steep section that may need signage or physical improvements to reduce the risk to children riding bikes. Council thanked community volunteers (including Western school students) and described ongoing maintenance and volunteer-support needs.
Next steps: staff will continue project work, finalize event logistics and implement grant purchases; parks staff will report back if further safety upgrades are recommended.
