Classroom aide tells Orange Board she filed wage complaint under new state law

Jenny Rodriguez, a classroom aide who said she has worked in the district for six years, used the public-comment period at the March 17 board meeting to announce she has filed a complaint with state labor authorities about pay and hours under a state law that took effect Jan. 1, 2025.
"I am just here regarding this issue," Rodriguez said. She said the State Labor Board had been in contact with the Board of Education and that she filed a formal complaint with Connecticut's Wage and Workplace Standards Division on Thursday. "We're still here. We're still going to fight, and it's the law," she told the board.
Before the comment, Mrs. Rigby read the board’s public-participation rules, reminding speakers comments will be limited to two minutes, that comments about security, due process, negotiations or grievances will not be permitted without appropriate waivers, and that FERPA limits discussion of individual students without a written parent waiver.
Board members did not take formal action on the complaint during the meeting; Rodriguez said she intends to continue raising the issue at future meetings until she hears otherwise.
