Facilities update: heat-pump rooftop unit, hands-free fixtures and $64,000 security grant funded upgrades

Facilities staff updated the Orange Board of Education on summer projects, preventive-maintenance priorities and capital improvements. The presentation reviewed HVAC/ventilation protocols adopted after pandemic guidance and described several completed and planned capital projects intended to improve safety, energy efficiency and building function.
The facilities presenter said the district replaced an end-of-life rooftop unit at PEC Play School with an electric heat-pump unit, noting it "runs on electricity but it's much more efficient," and that the district received a substantial rebate from the utility for choosing a heat-pump option. Staff also described an ongoing installation of hands-free restroom devices and new classroom storage and seating funded through the town capital plan.
On security, the presenter said the district obtained a competitive school security grant for approximately $64,000 toward a larger upgrade estimated at $200,000; the grant is reimbursable and requires a town match. The funds paid for exterior 4K cameras, a new server to house camera feeds, associated switches and software updates; the police dispatch center will also have access to camera views.
The board was told that Silver Petracelli Architecture is conducting a facilities condition assessment (a building study and code analysis) and expects a draft report in mid-October with the final report to follow several weeks later. Board members were reminded that capital plan requests for short-term projects are typically due by mid-November.
Board members thanked facilities staff for summer work and for prioritizing preventive maintenance and safety improvements. The facilities study and security-installation work will continue, and staff will report back when the building-study draft is available.
