Board adopts 2025–26 academic calendar; committee weighed but could not add additional religious holidays

The Old Saybrook School District Board of Education voted to adopt the 2025–26 academic calendar after calendar-committee review and community input.

The calendar committee recommended a start date of Aug. 28 and a tentative last day of June 15, 2026, while noting constraints imposed by the statutory requirement to provide 180 instructional days within a defined calendar window. Committee members reported that they considered requests to add additional religious or cultural days but concluded that the 180-day requirement and scheduling logistics prevented such additions for this cycle. The committee recommended, and the board endorsed, creating a separate document of significant cultural dates to guide scheduling and community awareness.

Board members discussed inclusion and the value of signaling recognition of cultural observances, and several trustees said they wanted the district to do a better job of educating the community about important dates. The board moved to adopt the calendar; the motion carried.

The superintendent explained the district's built‑in "snowflake" make-up days and noted recent operational decisions to preserve a February break by shifting a used make-up day to March. The board also discussed a proposed graduation date tied to the 180th day: a recommendation for June 16 was discussed in planning remarks and adopted in subsequent votes.
