Motion to empower mayor to negotiate economic development director fails on commission floor

Commissioner Aaron Frazier moved the motion and Mark Blevins seconded it.
After discussion about workforce needs and whether the county should proceed on staffing the position, the motion failed in a recorded roll-call vote: 10 yes, 13 no. Supporters said the county needed coordinated efforts to recruit businesses; opponents questioned committing staff or budget direction without fuller commission consensus.
The failure means the commission did not authorize the mayor to negotiate a staffing structure or budget on the commission’s behalf; any future action will require a new motion and majority approval.
