Eagle Scout bike rack, life‑jacket loaner station and dune‑protection press event proposed at Saugatuck workshop

At the Aug. 7 workshop several community projects and an event request were presented to the Saugatuck City Council.

Brooks Massing outlined plans for an Eagle Scout project to install a bike rack at the base of Mt. Baldhead Park, presenting options for location, rack styles and the city partnership needed to complete the work. Massing provided a plan, inspiration and a materials estimate.

Anthony Carlotto presented a proposal to establish a life‑jacket loaner station near Oval Beach to promote water safety; he provided a design, maintenance and monitoring plans, outreach and promotion ideas, a budget overview and a materials list. The council did not take formal action on either community proposal at the workshop; staff follow‑up was requested to determine permitting, installation logistics and any maintenance responsibilities.

Separately, Michigan Environmental Council and the Saugatuck Dunes Coastal Alliance submitted a special event application to host a press conference and legislative tour at Oval Beach with Representative Rachel Hood to highlight proposed legislation intended to strengthen protections for critical dune areas and to showcase dune ecology.

Public comment on agenda items included a short comment from Paul Whitefield about short‑term rentals. The council did not act on the event application during the workshop; staff will process the special event request through the normal permit and notification procedures.
