Saugatuck city officials revisited a plan to provide internet service at Oval Beach during the Aug. 7 workshop, when City Manager Ryan Cummins presented a proposal from Metro Wireless, an authorized Starlink provider, to install public Wi‑Fi.
The Metro Wireless package, as presented, would require a one‑time installation and equipment expense of $15,000 and a monthly charge of $698 for 36 months. Metro Wireless said the service "will provide an estimated 2,000 users with Wi‑Fi calling capability and the ability to send messages, stream music, share photos, and use the internet," but that "streaming high quality video won’t be supported due to the amount of data usage." Metro Wireless also said staff use could be prioritized and that deployment could begin within three to four weeks once approved.
Lisa Mize, director of the CVB, told the council the CVB board has been exploring destination development opportunities and that the CVB may have funding to help cover the upfront cost. Tyler Hoffman of Metro Wireless presented the technical overview and timeline for deployment.
Supporters framed the proposal as a public‑safety and visitor‑service improvement for Oval Beach, while staff noted operational details that would need resolution, including data‑usage limits and priorities for municipal devices. The session did not include a formal vote to approve contracting authority or to obligate funding; council members asked staff to continue vetting the proposal and coordinate discussion with the CVB on possible contributions.
