Sterling Board approves consent agenda and budget report; declines insurance claim on boiler part

The Sterling Board of Education approved routine items and the district’s Budget and Expense Report during its Dec. 17, 2025 meeting, and Superintendent Theodore Friend told the board the district would not pursue an insurance claim for a new boiler expansion tank.
The board approved the consent agenda — including the Nov. 19 minutes, superintendent’s report, special education, principal and clinical supervisor reports, and the monthly check register — on a motion by Vice Chair Jennifer Mossner seconded by John Brady; the motion passed unanimously. Business Manager Sara Howley then reviewed the Budget and Expense Report. Treasurer Victoria Robinson-Lewis moved approval; John Brady seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Superintendent Theodore Friend reported the Building Maintenance Insurance Policy carries a $10,000 deductible while the total cost to replace the new boiler expansion tank is $12,066, so the district would shoulder most of the cost and filing a claim could increase future premiums. The board agreed it was not feasible to file the claim at this time.
Chair Courtney Langlois also provided highlights from the Plainfield Board liaison meeting, including the appointment of Stacey Kelleher as Plainfield High School principal, ongoing searches for an assistant principal, athletic and arts updates, and local discussions about a Certified Nursing Assistant program while the district focuses on expanding its Manufacturing Program. No members of the public signed up to speak during the meeting. The board adjourned at 6:41 p.m.
