Consultants leading the Pocahontas Area Community School District superintendent search told the board at a Nov. 7 work session they would finalize the application posting and stakeholder survey so the district could begin outreach immediately. The group agreed on a timeline through Dec. 31 and set a Nov. 24 launch date for the community survey.
The survey is intended to collect anonymous narrative feedback on district strengths, opportunities and desired professional and personal qualities for the next superintendent, and to identify community members interested in serving on mixed interview teams. Russ, the consultant who explained the survey approach, said the firm will present a thematic report: “the report itself would be public,” and the board would have to take action to release raw narrative responses, making the summary the central public product.
On timing, consultants recommended opening the application period promptly and discussed two main scheduling approaches: close after the Christmas break to capture candidates who finalize plans with family, or close earlier to position the district ahead of the statewide second-phase searches. The consultants described trade-offs: a slightly later closing can yield “three to five more applicants” on average but can leave the district in a heavier part of the hiring season; earlier closing increases the odds of getting top-choice candidates before competing districts finalize their lists.
The board discussed whether to run two-week screening interviews to filter five to eight candidates down to three finalists or to skip screening and bring a slightly larger set of finalists directly to finalists’ day. Consultants said skipping screening could shorten the process and lower the contract cost by roughly $1,100, but it would eliminate a scheduled personal interaction step with candidates.
Consultants proposed a full-day finalist schedule: a noon community tour for each finalist, mixed interview team sessions in the early afternoon, followed by board interviews later the day and deliberations afterward. They recommended two mixed community groups (staff, parents, community members) of roughly 15–20 people each so finalists must answer the same questions to a broad cross section of the district.
On pay and benefits, consultants urged a wider salary band to stay competitive. Trent recommended increasing the band to 155–180 thousand dollars to align with nearby searches, noting that total compensation (salary plus benefits and any relocation assistance) matters in recruiting. The consultants said relocation allowances commonly range from $2,500 to $12,000, with up to $5,000 typical in many districts.
The board also discussed contract details and confidentiality for finalists. Consultants advised keeping finalist names confidential until a hire is finalized to attract stronger candidates; the board agreed that confidentiality was the preferred approach. Consultants said contract items (vacation language, benefits, and other terms) could be reviewed in closed session before finalization.
Next steps: the consultants will finalize the survey and job posting, send materials to the district for distribution (including a paper option and QR code), and update the board weekly on incoming applications. The board and consultants set a target timeline through Dec. 31 for the application process and agreed to reconvene to review candidate materials and schedule interview days.
