The Pocahontas Area Community School District board unanimously approved the ISB-supplied 503 policy series, which includes student conduct rules and prescriptive procedures for seclusion and restraint.
Board members asked how frequently staff must conduct checks when a student is placed in seclusion; the superintendent said supervisors must visually check the student, and parent notification should occur the same day when required. The superintendent stressed staff must take restraint only as a last resort and that law enforcement would be called if safety cannot otherwise be maintained.
Chris moved to waive the second reading and approve the policies as provided by the Iowa School Board (ISB); the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. The administration said it will reformat the ISB text into the district’s policy template and return finalized language for records.
