Oxford students highlight inclusivity of Unified Sports; board praises program

Members of the Oxford High School Unified Sports team presented a video and essays describing how the program promotes inclusion; a student essayist said the program made her feel welcomed and helped her gain friends and confidence.
The Oxford School District board on Monday recognized the district’s Unified Sports program, part of Special Olympics, and heard student testimony about the program’s impact on school climate.
Dr. Miller (introduced students and administrators) and a group of student team members presented a short video produced by senior Samantha Flutter. Students described Unified Sports as an inclusive varsity program that meets daily and offers after-school activities, rallies and tournaments.
Sarah, a team member who was runner-up in an athlete essay contest, read a personal essay and described how joining Unified Sports changed her school experience. "What does unified mean to me?" she asked. She recounted being bullied at a previous school and said, of Oxford, "The first day we played kickball ... everyone was cheering me on. I was never cheered on before. I kicked the ball and ... I was very comfortable playing with this team." The students noted the team includes about 60 members — roughly 5% of the high-school population — and that the program has earned state recognition, with banners displayed in the gym.
Board members thanked the students, invited them to take a picture with the board and said the program exemplifies the district’s goals of respect and inclusivity for all learners.
