The Pocahontas Area Comm School District board heard an update on the Paloy site’s abatement and demolition work and was told demolition specifications should be ready for board review in January.
District staff reported that all hazardous materials that could be removed without demolition have been abated, but some materials remain inside walls and roof structures and must be removed during demolition. Engineers have made two onsite visits to verify architectural drawings, locate utility hookups and take precise measurements of the basement footprint to calculate the fill required after demolition.
The district said demolition specifications will include utility‑capping requirements and the contractor’s responsibility to identify and remove residual materials encountered behind finished surfaces. If specifications are ready before the January meeting, the administration indicated it would not delay the bidding process; otherwise the board will consider a special meeting to approve specs so bidding can proceed.
Board members discussed logistics for salvaging trophies and other items, the need to minimize volunteer exposure inside the building because of declining air quality, and coordination with the city on removal of stored items. Staff advised that volunteers could assist outside the building moving items to storage containers but that interior work should be handled by trained city or district staff under proper worker protections.
No formal vote was required at the update. The board expects to review and, if appropriate, approve demolition specifications at a future meeting, with bidding to follow.
