The Pocahontas Area Community School District board appointed Dena Hudson to fill a vacant District Two seat on a 4–2 vote after accepting the resignation of the previous director.
Board members followed the district’s published appointment process: the board read statements from three eligible candidates — Nicole Singer, Tanya Killian and Dena Hudson — and then opened nominations. An initial motion to appoint Tanya Killian failed on a 3–3 tie. A subsequent motion to appoint Dena Hudson carried 4–2, and she was administered the oath of office at the meeting.
Board members thanked all applicants and encouraged them to consider running in a future election. Administrators said they would provide the new director with training materials and recommend IASB (Iowa Association of School Boards) resources to help her get up to speed on policies and procedures.
The board framed the decision as the result of a deliberative appointment process. The president emphasized that the appointee is expected to act as an “impartial juror of fact” in future board deliberations and noted that policy and training materials are available to support the new trustee.
The board returned to other business after the swearing-in, including personnel items and facility updates.
