Sterling principal Heather Nickerson presented a slate of agriculture-in-the-classroom ideas to the Sterling Agricultural Commission on Feb. 5; commissioners said they support classroom agricultural lessons and asked staff to return with budgeted proposals for three selected projects.
Nickerson and teacher representatives proposed ideas targeted at 4th-, 7th- and 8th-grade students. The longer list of potential activities included a 'Space Farm' challenge, a brand-design marketing project, observation bee hives or ant farms, embryology kits with egg incubators, digital soil testing kits, a mobile 'Garden on Wheels', preservation kits, a mobile cooking cart and hydroponic microgreen trays.
Commissioners asked Nickerson and her staff to resubmit the three chosen ideas with specific cost estimates so the Commission can consider budgeting and implementation steps.
