Sterling commission renames scholarship for founding member, approves outreach plan

K. Patton and Rebecca Gervais updated the scholarship application and reported it had been submitted to local schools. Commissioner Robin Cousens moved to rename the award in memory of founding member Verna Cole; Recording Secretary Rebecca Gervais seconded the motion, which carried 3-0.
The Commission also agreed to reach out to homeschool families via the town website and the commission's Facebook page to broaden the applicant pool. Commissioners noted a local Future Farmers of America (FFA) student in the audience was invited to submit an application; additional students were encouraged to apply.
Next steps: the updated application will remain distributed to area schools and the Commission will monitor submissions and outreach results.
