The West Bridgewater School Committee and visiting coaches celebrated the district's Unified sports program after Special Olympics North America selected the Middle-Senior High School for a National Banner recognition for excellence in inclusion, advocacy and respect.
"We are honored to be recognized by the Special Olympics for the hard work and dedication of [our coaches, athletes and volunteers]," said Mrs. Paige, who, alongside Miss Maloney and Miss Key, described the program's rapid growth since its relaunch after the COVID interruption. The program was identified in the meeting as one of 19 schools in Massachusetts and among 202 schools nationwide to achieve the 2023'1024 recognition.
Program leaders said the season begins immediately, with games starting next week, and invited the community to attend a hosted Unified event on Nov. 4 at the Senior High School; volunteers, concessions and fundraising T-shirts were mentioned as part of community supports. Speakers highlighted the program's role in promoting collaboration among student athletes, partners, teachers and volunteers and described positive feedback from families who said the program had meaningful impact for students.
The committee offered congratulations and encouraged community attendance at upcoming events to support students.
