School building planning advances; MSBA educational plan, sites and timeline discussed

Administrators said MSBA guidance sets space standards; the district and its designers are mapping educational spaces and writing the educational plan that must accompany schematic materials. Staff reported they have narrowed potential sites under committee review to Rosel/McDonald and Howard and will move into preferred schematic design after completing the educational plan. Preferred schematic and schematic design phases together will span several months before a town-meeting vote, tentatively planned for December or January of the next cycle.
Committee members discussed trade-offs among configurations (for example, pre‑K–6 versus other grade configurations), the long-term cost of renovating aging buildings and the operational consequences of leaving older buildings open. Administrators noted that partial renovation often triggers code upgrades (for example, bathroom and electrical work) that raise renovation costs substantially and that preserving multiple aging buildings may add future staffing and maintenance costs.
The administration said the project team is building a public-facing website and an FAQ page to support community outreach and expects to hold public forums before any town vote. School-building committee meetings will continue twice monthly to refine the educational plan and the design materials that will be shared with residents and budget committees.
